Parts of the violin and tuning

Before you’re going to learn how to play the violin, you first need to know all the parts of this instrument. I think it is always nice to know your instrument well.

Maybe you can learn them by heart? Often there is a shoulder rest delivered with the violin. With this you can hold the violin better. The next picture shows you how to put it on.

Tune the strings

Every time you are going to play, you have to tune the strings. For this you need a tuning device or a piano. Search the right tones by the strings ( G, D, A, E) You always start with the A string. Pluck the A string and listen carefully. Then you listen to the tone A of the tuning device. If your A string doesn’t sound the same as the one on the tuning device, it means it is out of tune. Your string can sounds higher of lower. If you hear a lot of difference, you need to use the pegs. When you hear a small difference, you need to use the fine tuners.

The Pegs

There is a lot of tension because of the strings. When you turn the peg the string probably turns back immediately. Of course you don’t want this to happen. Therefore you must push the peg into the pegbox when you are tuning the string. When the string is too high, you should turn the peg into the direction of your fingerboard. Knowing from my own experience you should pay attention that you don’t move the peg too much. Only a tiny bit. Otherwise it will change too much the tone of the string. This is a very common problem. When the string is too low, you should turn the peg into the direction of the scroll. For this also you must not move the peg too much.

The Fine tuners

With the fine tuners you can make the string in tune when there is a small difference between the right note and your string. If the string is too high you have to make it lower. You must turn it to the left then. When the string is too low you must turn the fine tuner to the right. When you think the A string is in tune, you can tune the other strings at the same way as the A string.
